Ferry between the Lyngen Alps (Lyngseidet) and Olderdalen — info, prices and timetable

I previously told you about the ferry between Tromso and the Lyngen Alps, which is super handy. This one is the logical next step, the extension to head towards Alta or Skjervoy if you don’t want to drive all the way around.

Basically, once you’re in Svensby, coming from Breivikeidet, you drive 20km and you reach Lyngseidet, where the next ferry will be waiting for you to cross the fjord. The schedules are connected and it’s super convenient.

Anyway, I’ll give you all the info on this ferry, which is really useful. You’ll see why!

Why take this ferry

Basically, this ferry is super practical. I took it for the first time just yesterday because I was in Finland to see the northern lights, except that on the way back there was an avalanche on the road from Skibotn heading south. So it was impossible to get to Tromso by road. After a night in the car, I was able to take this ferry.

• this ferry is great if you’re travelling along the northern route, coming from Alta, Skjervoy or wherever, and you want to reach the Lyngen Alps or Tromso. You save a lot of time, because otherwise you have to drive aaall the way around
• so it’s a backup solution in case of an avalanche. You don’t necessarily think about it, especially us as tourists, but it saves you from getting stuck
• the crossing is beautiful! Sure, the Lyngen Alps are best seen from the other side, but this boat trip is genuinely impressive
• from Skjervoy you don’t save any time. From Alta, you save a good hour of driving. But most of all you save a lot of kilometres! Because the ferry is a good shortcut. And it gives you a break, so that’s not bad

Where to catch the ferry between the Lyngen Alps and Olderdalen

The starting point in the Lyngen Alps is at Lyngseidet, the main (and only?) town in Lyngen. The harbour is impossible to miss.

To get there, either you come from the south of Lyngen, Oteren, Signaldalen… (but honestly there’s no point coming that way, since it’s just as quick to drive straight to Olderdalen), or you come from Svensby, a road through a magnificent fjord. It’s 20/25min of driving.

If you’re coming from the Breivikeidet ferry, then you’ll have schedules that line up with your first crossing.

If you’re leaving from Olderdalen, then again it’s hard to miss because it’s on the main road, and I’ll admit that even though the surroundings are gorgeous, there’s nothing else around. You’re 1h from Skjervoy, and 3h from Alta.

What are the ferry schedules between Olderdalen and the Lyngen Alps (Svensby)

The ferry runs all year round, with plenty of crossings throughout the season. First off, you can find all the schedules here for 2026 (FRA = “from” in the document).

One important thing: the ideal website / app to plan your journeys is Entur.no, which of course includes the ferry timetables. Super handy!

Watch out for public holidays: check the file below for the crossings on public holidays (Christmas, New Year’s Day…) to see whether they run or not.

Ferry price and payment

To pay, the best option is to have AUTOPASS. That means having registered your car’s license plate to go through Norway’s ferries, tunnels and tolls.

When you drive onto the boat, your plate will be scanned.

• If you have a rental car, you automatically have autopass.
• You don’t pay anything on the spot, it’s charged directly through autopass.
• If you have the little autopass tag, you get a 10% discount

Here are the prices without the discount:

• standard vehicle: 152 NOK (around 14€)
• after that it depends on the size, you’ll find the details below
• Electric vehicles: 106 NOK
• motorcycle with rider: 53 NOK

Pedestrians:

• it’s free for pedestrians
• it’s also free for bikes!

if you don’t have Autopass (rare, but possible):

• you can use the FerryPay website to pay for Norway’s various ferries
• if you don’t have that either, then an attendant will come and ask you to pay by bank card, but contactless only. Why? I have no idea 😀

Do you need to book the ferry in advance

No, you can’t book in advance.

You need to arrive a bit early, but honestly not much earlier (unless it’s Friday afternoon or Saturday morning, in which case I’d say allow 45min ahead, especially in summer). There’s plenty of room but it’s a popular crossing.

The boat can take around 70 cars according to the staff on site. But there are trucks that board too because it saves them time (and fuel).

In March, when I arrived, I was there 1h early, on a Saturday at midday, and I was at the front of the 2nd lane, so no problem at all.
