All the agencies to see whales and orcas – from the end of October to the end of January
Another of Tromso’s great classics, but during a very specific period. From the end of October to the end of January, the whales and especially the orcas appear. Originally the cetaceans were really on the coast of Tromso, but now they have migrated and are a little further away, towards Skjervoy..
There are different types of boat to see them, including :
- a comfortable, new electric boat, the journey takes 2? hours along the coast, then 2 hours to find and observe them
- a RIB boat to get up close and personal after a bus journey
Find below all the boats for whale watching in Skjervoy and Tromso
Warning: when it’s no longer the season, some boat suppliers tend to close their adverts rather than update the dates. So if you are redirected to another page, it just means that they are preparing for the next season..

A must in the Nordic countries, full of thrills! Snowmobiling is pretty simple: all you need is snow and relatively flat terrain. Although the Tromsø region is hilly, there are several options with excellent agencies, particularly in the magnificent setting of the Lyngen Alps..
Please note: you need a driving licence to drive yourself, otherwise you can only be a passenger.
To sum up, the snowmobile season runs from early November to mid-April, depending on the snow conditions. In the following article, I’ll give you full details of snowmobile agencies in Tromsø and practical information.

They’re adorable, each with their own little personality, and they’re really enthusiastic about the idea of running. You see them all excited, and so are we!

All the Sami camps to see the reindeer
Reindeer are a real part of the landscape here! You can come across them just about anywhere in the region, but sometimes you need a bit of luck, as they roam freely. They belong to the Sami, of course, but roam wherever they find food and peace and quiet. They can be seen along roadsides, in fields… or sometimes not at all! On Kvaløya, they are quite common.
If you want to maximise your chances of seeing them and find out more about the Sami, the indigenous people of Lapland, a visit to a Sami farm is ideal. You can get up close to the reindeer, feed them and experience Sami culture at close quarters.
For a very long time, there were no traditional small reindeer farms around Tromsø. These two historic farms can be found here:
But two new, smaller farms have recently been added:
- Wondering Reindeer, near Sommaroy
- Unit X Reindeer Camp, south of Tromso
You can feed them or practice reindeer sledding (smoother than dog sledding). In the following article, I’ll tell you all about how to see the reindeer in Tromso. But below, I give you all the possibilities in detail

Boat trips in the fjords to explore or go fishing – all year long
In the region’s super-prolific waters, fishing comes naturally here. You can fish easily in the open sea or in the fjords (whereas you need a very expensive licence for lakes and rivers). And best of all, the fish are good-sized!
If you don’t have any equipment, you can go with local fishermen or agencies.
There are several possibilities. Some of the boats that visit the fjords do a fishing session like Polar Adventure. I don’t think fishing is my thing because I didn’t catch anything. But the best thing is to go on a fishing boat. There are several in Tromso harbour, the one with the best reputation and which is really pretty is Hermes II. A typical boat and a great guide.
Another great option is ice fishing. Of course, the lakes and fjords have to be frozen over, but at this time of year they certainly are. It’s a fun, totally Nordic experience, because at weekends you can see lots of people making their holes in the ice and fishing. For more information, contact Skadi Adventures, a great family-run agency.
Snowshoeing and cross-country skiing – from November to April
Of course, there are plenty of great sporting activities in and around Tromso..
First of all, if you want to go downhill skiing, then there’s the Tromso AlpinPark, in Kroken, where you can hire equipment and buy your ticket for the slopes.
For snowshoeing or cross-country skiing, you can hire equipment in town (Tromso Outdoor, for example), and take to the slopes, which are either in town (high up) or in the countryside, such as at Kattfjordvatnet or Breivikeidet..
Or you can go through an agency that will take care of the equipment and bring you to your destination. Here are the different options.

Discover the Tromso area all year round!
I always think it’s a pity to come to Tromso and not take advantage of the scenery. So okay, when you’re doing your activities, you’re going to get out of the city, you’re going to some great places.
But a trip to Kvaloya, the Lyngen Alps or other great places around the city is always a good idea.
Ideally by car, but if you don’t have one, then there are quite a few options. The programme depends on the weather. They could go to Tromvik or Sommaroy, for example..
Other winter activities in Tromso
After the great classics presented in the previous sections, here you’ll discover some more surprising activities, such as jumping into the fjords in a floating suit, ice fishing, snow scooters… different, fun things to do for a change from sled dogs and snowmobiles!

Summer activities in Tromso
Because, yes, this is a rather special time – you didn’t think you’d get away with it. 😀
I think you really need to take these factors into account, as they will influence your holiday and its preparation. On the other hand, it’s not prohibitive – you’re still going to have a great holiday with little light, but you’ll need to optimise. In short, let’s look at all this.

Wheelchair-accessible branch activities
Quite honestly, Tromso is complicated for people with reduced mobility, especially those in wheelchairs. I know, Norway is a super-adapted country, that’s true. Oslo is great, with wide pavements, it’s new and everything’s been done for wheelchairs. But Tromso is more difficult.
The pavements are small, there’s not necessarily a walkway on them, they’re bumpy. So it’s not easy.
However, the port and the new districts along the seafront are definitely worth a visit. It’s wide, there are no complicated pavements, and it’s really pretty.
However, the port and the new districts along the seafront are definitely worth a visit. The hotels are suitable, but what I really recommend are the ones on the harbour. Yes, they’re probably the most expensive, but you don’t have to deal with snowy or icy roads and pavements (again). So here among the adapted hotels I recommend the Scandic Ishavshotel, the Clarion The Edge and the Radisson Blu, there are no complicated pavements, and it’s really pretty..
As far as this article is concerned, I have to admit that I had a hard time finding suitable vehicles. Some service providers told me no, and the vast majority didn’t reply.
However, one night on my way to watch the auroras I came across ONE vehicle that could transport wheelchairs, and it’s so cool! It’s Tromsø Accessible Tours, and I’ve listed the details of what they offer below.

In conclusion
Now you know everything!
I’ve tried not to include agencies I’ve heard bad things about, opportunists, things that really don’t seem reliable. If I don’t know them, I’ve relied on the many reviews (there’s nothing without any references) and feedback I’ve had.
But what’s certain is that there’s always something to do, in addition to the most beautiful places to see around Tromso (and there are lots!), so yes, some of them have a cost, but if you can afford it, it’s a sacrifice you won’t regret. 🙂
