Fjord Norway Cruise

A cruise through the fjords of Norway is a must. When you visit Bergen, it would be a shame not to take advantage of it, because yes, Bergen is a well-placed city to discover these landscapes!

Bergen is usually the starting point for roadtrips in the fjord region, but you can simply visit the fjords in a day from the city, without having to sleep anywhere else. It’s easy, I’ll explain below, what are the best day cruises from Bergen. But also, from Bergen you can discover the Norwegian fjords and the Norwegian coast with a multi-day cruise.

There are many possibilities, and I’ll give you some interesting examples. Let’s go!

The most beautiful day cruises in the Norwegian fjords from Bergen

The Bergen – Flam cruise

It’s new, it’s beautiful and, frankly, it’s a must-do!

From the beginning of May to the end of September, you can take one of the most beautiful day cruises in the country: from Bergen to Flam.

So why is it so great? Because during the 5h30 one-way trip, you’ll pass through the fjords of Bergen, then plunge into the immense Sognefjord, one of the most impressive in the country, and finally end up in the magnificent Aurlandsfjord, to dock in Flam.

Once there, you can visit the village and return to Bergen by boat, or take the train back. In particular, you can take the famous train line from Flam to Myrdal, which then goes on to Bergen. In short, here’s the info on this cruise between Bergen and Flam:

  • Early May to late September
  • Duration: 5h30
  • Bergen – Flam departs at 8am
  • Flam – Bergen departs at 3:30 pm
  • The trip costs between €90 and €120

Naeroyfjord cruise

Naeroyfjord is one of Norway’s most beautiful fjords. Well, for me, it’s simply the most beautiful, very, very impressive.

Sailing this fjord is one of the most beautiful experiences in Norway, and just as well, it’s super easy!

The cruise runs from Gudvangen to Flam (or the other way round, as you prefer). You can go one way or the other. You pass through Naeroyfjord and then Aurlandsfjord.

If you decide to go on your own, from Gudvangen or Flam, you can buy tickets directly from the organizer. I’d also recommend the following article on how to get from Bergen to Flam. Here’s some additional information on the cruise:

  • the trip takes 2 hours
  • costs from 625 NOK
  • if you take the trip in one direction, you’ll need to book a bus to return to the departure point
  • the first departure is at 9 a.m., the last at 5:30 p.m.

The Kaupanger – Gudvangen Ferry on the Naeroyfjord

One of the most beautiful ferry journeys in the country! If you’re driving to or from Bergen, or even if you’re actually on foot, you can make a great ferry trip. Gudvangen is the starting point for the Naeroyfjord, while Kaupanger is on the other side of the Sognefjord.

So with this crossing, you’re in for a real treat as you pass through the Sognefjord, then the Aurlandsfjord and finally the Naeroyfjord. However, this is a seasonal ferry, so only in summer.

  • available from June 1 to August 31
  • fare :
    • NOK 2,200 for a car and 5 people
    • NOK 519 per passenger if you don’t have a car
  • crossing time 2h20
  • departure is at
    • 9:15 am from Kaupanger
    • 12h45 from Gudvangen

Cruise on Mostraumen fjord

A very classic and easy-to-organize cruise in Bergen: a visit to the Osterfjord and Mostraumen Strait. This is probably the most easily accessible fjord from the Hanseatic city. Osterfjord is a pretty, super-narrow fjord, with fairly high cliffs. A great way to get a change of scenery without having to go too far! (This route takes you to the very end of a 27km fjord, crossing many waterfalls. I did it quite a few years ago, and have very fond memories of it!

  • the cruise lasts 4 hours
  • it costs around €70 (depending on the exchange rate)
  • departure (depending on the season) at 10 a.m. and/or 2.30 p.m.

A cruise from Bergen to Fjaerland with a visit to the glacier

When I looked up the various cruises and boat trips, I thought I’d only find the classic ones. Although it’s been 10 years, Fjaerland is still one of my best memories of my time in the Norwegian fjords. A magical little place, a fjord full of charm.

So this boat trip from Bergen is, I think, super interesting (yes, ok, it costs the earth, I agree), but it’s not just a boat because you’ll also see the Bøyabreen glacier and the Fjaerland glacier museum, passing through the village of Balestrand.

So basically, here’s the route in a nutshell:

  • ferry from Bergen to Balestrand on the superb Sognefjord
  • smaller tourist boat from Balestrand to Fjaerland
  • visit to the Norwegian Glacier Museum
  • visit to the Bøyabreen glacier
  • and return the same way

Frankly, I really like this route. You’ve got the Sognefjord, the Fjaerland fjord, then the village, then a glacier. Not bad at all! It’s a big day out, with plenty to see. Here’s the practical info:

  • it’s a day that lasts almost 13 hours
  • departure from Bergen at 8 a.m., return at around 8:45 p.m.
  • it costs 235€.

Norled boat trips from Bergen

Norled is one of Norway’s largest ferry companies. And the good thing is that they have quite a few trips from Bergen. So yes, they’re transport ferries, not tourist boats (like the Naeroyfjord trip, for example), but they’re also ideal for discovering the fjords around Bergen. And the trips are pretty good for getting there and back in a day. Let’s take a look. I’m also going to tell you which ferries take cars, because I think that could be useful 🙂 All these routes are super clearly grouped together at Direct Ferries.

  • Bergen – Sogndal
    • journey time: 4h45
    • price: from €85 per person
    • no car required
    • info and booking
  • Bergen – Vardetangen
    • journey time: 1h
    • price: from €28 per person
    • no car required
    • info and booking
  • Bergen – Lavik
    • journey time: 2h20h
      • price: from €60 per person
    • no car required
    • info and booking
  • Bergen – Balestrand
    • journey time: 4h
      • price: from €75 per person
    • no car required
    • info and booking

Conclusion

So there you have it, I think I’ve covered all the possibilities from Bergen! So you have the tourist day cruises, those on the more traditional ferries, the guided ones, the little two-hour cruises. But one thing’s for sure: you won’t be disappointed.

Yes, it’s expensive, we won’t lie. But it’s the kind of outing you don’t often do in your life, and you’ll really get a kick out of strolling around these fjords.

So really, take the time to visit the fjords around Bergen if you’re passing through Norway’s most beautiful city🙂
