The Lofoten Islands are considered the most beautiful place in Norway, no less. And, having been there every year, I can confirm that it’s true! There are lots of places to see, hikes absolutely everywhere, mountains each more beautiful than the next.
Lofoten islands are very urbanized, but on a single axis, so you absolutely have to take the small roads to get away from the people and the traffic. And what’s more, you’ll come across a few little nuggets, so I’ve put it all on a map, which I’ll explain how it works just below. You’ll find :
- the best accommodations on the Lofoten Islands (over 50)
- the best hikes
- all the most beautiful places and viewpoints
- restaurants and cafés
- the best places to see the Northern Lights in Lofoten
- all activities and service providers
- campsites
- and all the best beaches, of course!
Overview of the Lofoten Islands map
In concrete terms, here’s what you’ll find on this map:
- Beaches
- The Lofoten Islands are renowned for their heavenly beaches (give or take a few degrees!). Crystal-clear water, beaches surrounded by mountains, clear sand. Truly unique! I’ve put here all the beaches that are easily accessible or accessible after a short hike, with a photo.
- The best places to see the Northern Lights
- Often, the best places to see the northern lights in the Lofoten Islands are the beaches. But I’ve listed a few more, which are usually less crowded. Although it’s not always easy in Lofoten because of the light pollution. But you’ll manage!
- Hiking in Lofoten
- The Lofoten Islands are a hiker’s paradise. With mountains everywhere, you can quickly reach breathtaking viewpoints, without necessarily having to climb for hours on end.
- Activities and agencies!
- There’s less choice of activities than in Tromso, for example. A lot will remain around kayaking, fishing trips and the Northern Lights. There’s only one dog-sledding service (and even then, it’s only open sparingly), a few people who do snowshoeing, and that’s about it. But Lofoten is nature all to yourself!
- The best, cheapest, quality accommodation
- The great thing about Lofoten is that there’s a huge choice of accommodation. Hotels, rorbuer (fishermen’s huts), family homes, not too expensive rooms. Even if inflation has been high over the past 3 years, if you get in early, you’ll have access to great accommodation.
- Bistros, restaurants and cafés
- There are more and more restaurants on Lofoten. In the past, there were very few, as Norwegians are not accustomed to eating out, and there are only 2 small towns. But now, you can find nice little restaurants even in Reine or Laukvik. The good restaurants are expensive, but the food is very good.
- Campsites
- As regulations are changing rapidly on the Lofoten Islands, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to sleep in the wild. So here’s a list of campsites, for tents or camper vans.

How to use the Google Maps of the Lofoten Islands
Well, it’s pretty straightforward. First of all, you need to know that this map is organized in layers. A layer is a set of points of interest, which I’ve arranged thematically, i.e. the most beautiful places, activities, accommodation… are grouped by category.
Why do I do this? Because it allows you to deactivate the layers one by one, i.e. if you’re not interested in the activities, or only want to see the accommodations, you can hide the others by unchecking the corresponding boxes (see example just below, it’s super simple) This works just as well on mobile as on computer.

The INDISPENSABLE map for road conditions
Because the weather in Norway, especially in Lofoten Islands, can be very teasing, roads can close at any time due to storms, avalanches or simply roadworks (they redo the roads a lot).
You’ll absolutely need to know which roads are open, what the weather conditions are, and whether the roads you’re about to take are closed or not. It’s indispensable, really. So for this, your companion for road conditions will be the VEGVESEN.NO website. Which you’ll need to check almost every day.
I’ll explain in more detail in the following article, which roads are closed in Norway
Other maps of Norway
These Google Maps are a concept I’m trying to develop a lot. Because they’re super practical, and when you’re on the road or trying to plan your trip, you want to know quickly where the various essential places are. So I’ve already made quite a few, particularly on Norway:
But I’m going to continue with the fjords and Bergen in particular. I’ve also made a few outside Norway that might interest you if you like this concept:
