In the Nordic countries, the snowmobile is just another means of transport. In Lapland, there are lanes for cars, for pedestrians, and also for snowmobiles. You can even take one to go grocery shopping!
But for us tourists, it’s mainly a way to have fun, to get a rush of sensations, to reach places that are normally out of reach. And honestly, it’s great! Contrary to what you might think, it’s not dangerous at all. It’s stable, and knowing how to ride a two-wheeler isn’t required at all.
That said, having a driver’s license is mandatory to be the driver!
On the downside, I only took very few photos on my rare snowmobile trips, sorry!

Which operators to choose in Tromsø for snowmobiling
There are more and more snowmobile operators around Tromsø. And that’s great, because it used to be an activity that was completely booked out even before the winter season began — everything was already reserved. Now, with the new ones, that won’t be the case anymore!
And the good news is that all the operators are high quality, the reviews are good, and above all the setting where you’ll ride is insane.
I’ve picked 4 to highlight because:
- Lyngen Experience is the one where you’ll spend the most time on the snowmobile, hence its higher price
- Camp Troll is the most renowned operator; apparently there are two French-speaking guides
- Aurora Wonderland is also an excellent operator in the Lyngen Alps
- Camp Tamok, mainly for its setting, in the Tamokdalen mountains, which are truly magnificent.

You can go with these ones with your eyes closed too (well, that’s not very practical), they’re high quality as well. By the way, since I couldn’t do them all (it costs a bit much!), if you have any feedback to share about your experience, don’t hesitate!
We’ll also see that some offer several time slots. If you’re there during a period with very little daylight, then taking the morning session will let you drive in normal light. Otherwise, it’s at night, and that’s fun too!

Snowmobiling under the northern lights
Okay, it’s never guaranteed. But if you take an evening snowmobile tour, you have a chance of seeing the northern lights if the sky is clear. The good news is that these operators are located in places where the snow is persistent, so where it’s colder, and therefore where the sky is better (Skibotn, Tamokdalen, the Lyngen Alps…)
So it’s something that can be really nice and interesting I think, a way to kill two birds with one stone — a snowmobile outing and a northern lights outing, and there you go!

A few practical tips about snowmobiling in Tromsø
- The snowmobiling season is limited… by the snow, logically. And you need quite a lot of it! Because it has to cover the lakes (which obviously must be frozen), the rocks, the grass, and be well packed down. So around Tromsø you could say it will be between mid-December and mid-April, before it melts completely and it gets too warm
- What’s more, in Norway, it’s forbidden to snowmobile alone, without an operator
- You need your driver’s license to snowmobile here (which isn’t the case in Finland, for example)
How does a snowmobile session work?
- First of all, the operator takes you to the activity spot by bus. You usually meet in the centre, in front of the Radisson. And from there we set off — between 1 and 2 hours of travel, depending on where we’re going
- Then the operator will lend you warm clothes if you don’t have any. Because it’s cold, and with the speed you feel it even more! So you’ll get a suit, gloves (super important), a helmet of course, and something to protect your eyes.
- The session starts with the safety briefing, which is super important, as well as the basic rules for driving a snowmobile. We’ll cover that below, but it’s very simple
- To drive, you need your driver’s license
- Usually we drive for a first hour, then swap drivers (since there are two of you on the snowmobile), and set off again for another hour.
- At the break, we have a hot drink and sometimes a bite to eat
- On the way back, there’s a meal
- Finally, they take you back to the centre of Tromsø

How to drive a snowmobile
Well, first of all you should know that it’s easy. A snowmobile is super stable and even though it’s heavy, it’s a very manoeuvrable machine.
There will be two of you on the snowmobile, so it’ll be slower, maybe a touch less nimble, but even less risky!
If you’ve ever ridden a scooter or a motorbike, you shouldn’t feel out of place — it’s exactly the same. The throttle on one side, the brake on the other. And if you release the throttle, it slows down gently.
And on top of that, some snowmobiles now just have two buttons to accelerate and brake — it’s even simpler!
In fact, the most “complicated” part, if I can call it that, will be following the instructions, which are generally: don’t overtake, stay on the trail, don’t go too fast, brake before a bend. In short, it’s just common sense.
You’ll need to pay attention to the guide’s instructions, which you’ll be taught before hitting the trail. Since you can’t hear anything, you’ll have to watch their hands. Hand raised, hands crossed… each sign means something (let’s go, stop, don’t move…)
Watch out for the bends. It’s manoeuvrable but not as much as a bike, so no sharp turns — you’ll need to anticipate and lean a little (but not too much).

And there you have it, I think you now know just about everything! There aren’t a huge number of options around Tromsø, but there are 3 good ones. Each has a good reputation and its own strengths, offering something extra (ice domes, snowshoeing in particular).
