Prices and ratings updated for the 2026/2027 season
Finding a place to stay during a trip to Tromso is a real challenge, for at least two reasons. First, the hotel supply is limited. Tromso is a small island, everything is packed onto it and it’s already overflowing. Second, prices are high to begin with. It’s Norway, that doesn’t help. Then, since it has become a very trendy destination, prices are skyrocketing, especially during the peak tourist season, that is from November to March.
The idea of this article is to tell you about several hotels in Tromso and its surroundings, the ones I’ve stayed in, including their breakfasts because it’s a super important meal in the Far North. I should point out that no hotel invited me, I always paid for my rooms, which is why these reviews are completely objective.
While I’m at it, if you want to go fast, right at the end of the article there’s a comparison of all the accommodation. Price, quality, location.
Also, there are quite a few apartments available in town, across every price range, which can be a good alternative, often cheaper, especially if there are more than 2 of you. I present several of them.
Before we start, I have two ultra-important tips to save money:
- be flexible: because it often varies from one day to the next, from one week to another.
- book in advance: there aren’t many hotels, even fewer cheap ones, and those get booked quickly. But they do exist, it would be a shame to miss out
And if, depending on what you want to see, you’d like to pay less, then take a look at the different seasons in Tromso! Because autumn can be a great, far cheaper alternative if you want to see the northern lights, for example.
Prices are indicative and for a double room. For a single person, either there are single rooms about 20% cheaper, or you’ll get a double room for around 10% less.
My favourite hotels in Tromso
ALL the hotels in Tromso (except the Moxy, which is next to the airport) are in Tromso’s hypercentre. A hypercentre that is therefore quite small but extremely handy, because you have absolutely everything nearby and from there it’s super easy to get out of the city.
These 4 hotels are my favourites in Tromso, including the little newcomer that is now the benchmark in town, with prices to match.
I’ll remind you that prices in the middle of winter are high and that generally in the low season they’re easily divided by 3, which lets you treat yourself, even in summer!

There are also these ones, which are popular. I haven’t stayed at the St Elizabeth yet but I’ve heard excellent things. And it’s a spa, which is quite nice for the long winter nights.
The Thon is renowned for its breakfasts and it’s true that whatever the city, it’s always something incredible; Tromso is no exception. For me, the best breakfast on the island.

Cheap hotels in Tromso
There’s a whole range of “cheap” hotels in Tromso. The catch: they’re cheap in the low season, that is from April to October, when they’re easily under €100 a night, sometimes as low as under €60 for a double room. You can check the ratings, they’re perfectly decent, but it’s the bare minimum: no breakfast, small room, sometimes a shared bathroom. But it does the job perfectly.
In high season, before it wasn’t especially expensive, now some push prices above €200, so for a few dozen euros more you can fall into the price range of the classier hotels, which raises the question.
These hotels are obviously the ones that get booked earliest!

As Tromso becomes more and more touristy, we’re seeing a growing number of apartments to rent for the holidays. It’s cool, it’s a change from a hotel, it’s more practical when you’re travelling as a family.

Accommodation outside the centre of Tromso
You’ll find a few hotels outside Tromso, but not many. There are several on Kvaloya, one in Malangen, several lovely places in the Lyngen Alps, but it still remains limited as soon as you leave the city. On the other hand, they’re really high quality.
As for private rentals, there you really find some great options that let you treat yourself; I’ll give you a few examples too.

A closer look at some hotels in Tromso city centre
When I didn’t have my own place, I loved staying in Tromso city centre. For practical reasons but also because I love wandering around this city. It’s more expensive than the outlying accommodation, there’s usually no parking available, but… 😀 it’s my little pleasure. In for a penny, in for a pound: the trip to Tromso is going to cost me an arm and a leg, so I might as well do it right.
In a hotel in Norway, I almost always go for the ones with a breakfast buffet. Simply because I head out in the morning, come back at the end of the day, grab something for dinner and off I go again to hunt the northern lights. So it lets me have a hearty breakfast (I’ve developed luxury tastes with the Norwegian breakfast; smoked salmon in the morning is a marvel) and not be hungry during the day. And there you go, I’ve got something to nibble on for dinner in the boot of the car (when it hasn’t frozen). Economically it’s not bad, and the Nordic people consider breakfast the most important meal of the day; it’s true that it helps you stay nicely productive.
Here are three or four hotels I particularly like in Tromso. In terms of breakfast and bedding, we’re at the very top, lovely views, good service. Anyway, let’s take a look at all this.
The Dock 69°39 by Scandic
This is THE new benchmark in Tromso. A brand-new design hotel (2024), set in the new Vervet district — that part of the waterfront undergoing a full transformation that’s clearly becoming the trendiest corner of the city. Suffice to say that in terms of modernity, there’s nothing better right now.
The rooms are superb, in a clean Nordic style, ranging from compact to large suites (16 to 51 m²). But the big plus is the Upper Dock, the brasserie-bar right at the top of the hotel, with its panoramic view over the harbour and mountains: perfect for a drink in the evening. There’s also a gym and a wellness area on site.
If you’re after something new, design-led and in the up-and-coming district, that’s where to go.
- Price: from ~€130 in the low season, and even in October when the northern lights are already out, so that’s cool. In the middle of winter, though, it’s from €350
- Rating: 9.1, the best in Tromso
- Parking: a paid covered car park nearby in Vervet
Radisson Blu Hotel Tromso
I’ve been to the Radisson several times, in autumn as well as winter. Off-season, the prices are far from crazy; I paid around €120 a night (in peak season, on the other hand, it can climb very, VERY high, but it’s ultra variable). And to think that used to be the mid-winter price. How sad 😀
It’s the safe bet by the water: superbly located, right in the centre on the harbour, a relatively chic hotel with very decent rooms and a great view over the city (if you get up early, you get the sunrise and the pink glow behind the mountain opposite). The little extra I love: the panoramic sauna and gym on the 10th floor, and the Rorbua pub on the ground floor for evening concerts.
And of course, the breakfast is really very good: super complete, with a variety of excellent breads.
- Price: from €100 to €300/400 for a double room, it climbs really high in peak season
- Rating: 8.4, a safe bet
- Parking: no free parking, there’s one on the harbour that’s super expensive, otherwise the underground car park a 10-min walk away is best
Scandic Ishavshotel
The Ishavshotel is Tromso’s iconic hotel, right at the end of the central quay. Be careful not to confuse it with the Scandic Grand (which has just moved to the Quality franchise), a little more dated: it really is the Ishavshotel you want, a notch above, one of the very best in the city.
It stays relatively affordable in the low season, around €120 a night, and during the busy tourist period it can climb to €500 (it gets ridiculous). But the quality is there: top location at the tip of the quay, lovely architecture, very nice interior, well-appointed rooms with sea, harbour or bridge views depending on the category. And a fabulous breakfast, served facing the water.

Clarion Hotel The Edge Tromso
We’re talking here about the second-best hotel in the city, recently dethroned by the Dock. The classiest, the most renowned, with exceptional facilities and a stunning view. I’d never stayed there for long because it was a bit out of budget in high season, but I eventually stayed in autumn — and I really, really loved it.
The rooms are great, the breakfast excellent, and above all there’s this rooftop with its sky bar: THE view of Tromso, 360° over the fjords, the city and the mountains. It can even be a good spot to watch for the northern lights! It’s ideally located, by the water right in the centre, 100 m from the harbour and the ferries.
On the budget side, it’s not that crazy: around €130 in the low season to about €400 in high season. It stings, but the value for money is excellent. Note that the high-season prices start earlier at the Clarion than at the other hotels.

A hotel near Tromso Langnes airport
Tromso Langnes airport isn’t far from the city centre. 15 minutes by bus, 10 by car, so it’s fairly convenient overall. Especially since the bus does a loop of the main city-centre hotels to bring people to the airport (the Express Bus)
However, if you’d like to stay closer to the airport, then the solution is the Moxy hotel. It’s really close, you can even walk there! Well, in winter you’ll have to drag your suitcases through the snow to get there, but it stays super handy. Count on 15 minutes on foot along the main road.
The hotel itself is very good, comfortable, good bedding, modern as it’s only 3 years old. And like any self-respecting Norwegian hotel, the breakfast is top quality!
The other advantage is the view. If the room faces the right way, you have a direct view of the mountains of Kvaloya island, with the channel, it’s superb.
Downside, though: the rooms aren’t very big, 18 m².

Sleeping in a glass igloo near Tromso!
It’s a bit of a dream, isn’t it? Those big glass bubbles where you have a perfect view of the sky, ideal for watching the northern lights.
It’s something you find much more in Finnish Lapland than in Norway (because of the drier climate and the much flatter terrain, maybe also because of the price!), but there are a few around Tromso.
What’s cool is that they’re very well located. Since the goal is to enjoy nature and the northern lights (well, if the sky isn’t cloudy), these igloos need to be far from light pollution with a nice clear view. And that’s the case for the ones offered here.

Where to park the car in Tromso
Having a car in Tromso is quite complicated. And yet indispensable. Driving in Tromso is fairly simple, but parking in the city centre is inevitably paid and not cheap. The car parks by the sea are paid for with a mobile app and are expensive.
On the other hand, there’s a giant car park “under the city”. Covered (of course), expensive but not that much. You can pay by card, which is handy if you don’t have the app. A full day can’t exceed €30, a night is around €8, a bit more expensive during the day.
To reach this underground car park, you simply need to get onto the network of roads that pass under the hill, and there will be 3 entrances, one to the north, one in the centre and one to the south. And hundreds of spaces.

Where to sleep in Tromso, in conclusion
As we’ve seen, sleeping in Tromso requires either a very big budget or some planning ahead. Because even in high season, solutions exist. They’re obviously more expensive than in low season, where prices start at €60, but by getting in early you can access the accommodation that won’t cost you an arm and a leg.
Otherwise, what pleasantly surprised me in Tromso and in Norway in general are the hotels that are expensive but high quality. They’re well located, with excellent bedding and a breakfast that’s always top notch, ideal for spending the day roaming around in nature!
