Palermo is one of Italy’s most fascinating (and vibrant!) cities — a constant cultural clash between Arab-Norman architecture, exuberant markets and unbeatable street food.
But where to stay in Palermo to make the most of the city without wasting time on transport? The choice of neighbourhood is crucial. In this article, I share my favourite addresses across 6 key neighbourhoods, selected from the highest-rated and most popular accommodation.
Which neighbourhoods to stay in Palermo?
Palermo is divided into several historic neighbourhoods with very different characters. Here are the 6 most relevant areas for choosing your accommodation, with their advantages and the ideal traveller profile.
Palermo is a glorious chaos, so I’ve tried to avoid the slightly tricky neighbourhoods. These areas are tried and tested — they’re not dangerous, but you should always keep an eye out for pickpockets. As long as you stay in the main historic centre, you’ll be fine. Stick to areas that are lively at night.
The criteria for these neighbourhoods were fairly simple:
- safe, and walkable
- something great to see nearby
- central, so you don’t need public transport to reach the historic centre
Via Maqueda / Quattro Canti — the lively heart, everything on foot
Via Maqueda is the main artery of the centro storico. It leads directly to the Quattro Canti, the iconic Baroque crossroads. Everything is walkable: Teatro Massimo, markets, Fontana Pretoria.
✅ For: Energy, local immersion, proximity to everything.
❌ Against: Can be noisy in the evening. Impromptu street parties — pretty much every night.
Ideal for: City-breakers, couples on a weekend break.
