In Iceland, Keflavik international airport sits some fifty kilometres from Reykjavik, at the tip of the Reykjanes peninsula: count on 45 minutes of driving, minimum. And since there’s no train or metro in the country, everything happens by road.
Good news: between the shuttles, the private transfer, car rental or the taxi, there’s a solution for every budget. Here’s the full comparison, kept up to date.
Keflavik airport – Reykjavik: the transport comparison
Keflavik airport – Reykjavik by express bus (Flybus)
The simplest option if you don’t have a car: the Flybus shuttle, which links the airport to Reykjavik’s BSÍ terminal in 45 minutes. Departures are timed to every flight: if your plane is late, the bus waits. Handy.
One recent change: there used to be two companies, Flybus and Airport Direct. Airport Direct was absorbed by the Icelandia group, and the airportdirect.is site now redirects… to flybus.is. So Flybus has become THE official airport shuttle.
On price (2026): 3,999 ISK to the BSÍ terminal, or 5,299 ISK with hotel drop-off, the «Flybus+» option. Children under 6 travel free. Note that for hotel drop-off, you still go via the BSÍ terminal, then a smaller shuttle finishes the trip.
For the return to the airport, departures leave roughly every 30 minutes from BSÍ. Book ahead (online or from your hotel) rather than waiting outside, especially in winter!
Keflavik airport – Reykjavik by private transfer
Maximum comfort: a driver waits for you in the arrivals hall with a sign bearing your name, and drops you off directly at your accommodation in Reykjavik. No waiting, no changeover at the bus terminal, and it runs on YOUR schedule, even for a flight landing at 3 a.m.
Count on from €100 per vehicle (and up to 8 people depending on the option you pick). And that’s where it gets interesting: it’s immediately cheaper than a taxi, which runs around €155. For a family with luggage or a late arrival, it’s honestly the option I recommend.
Or even if you just want a driver and can’t be bothered fussing with the bus. €100 for 1/2/3 people is great!
Renting a car at Keflavik airport
Now this one is really, really the easiest. If you want to roam around the country or the Reykjavik area for several days, then renting a car at Keflavik airport turns out to be the best option.
When you leave it to the last minute, especially in high season, prices can shoot up fast. So I’d advise you to sort it out well in advance.
Prices start around €30 for standard cars.
In short, my main advice is to compare. And better still, you should compare the comparison sites!
I rely on two sure bets:
- Discover Cars, really clear info, a good amount of choice, genuinely good
- Booking, the great classic that absorbed Rental Cars. I really like it
And that way, no need for a taxi or bus. Job done!

Keflavik airport – Reykjavik by public bus
There’s a public bus system called Strætó, the yellow buses you see pretty much everywhere. And it serves the airport too, via line 55.
You’ll find all the timetables (it runs every 1 to 2 hours depending on the time of day) on the bus company’s website; the ticket price is 2,400 Icelandic krónur (about €16.50, 2026 fare).
To make life easier, you can use the Klapp app, which is Strætó’s ticketing system, with routes, real-time buses, ticket purchase… the app can be downloaded here.
The first bus leaves around 6:20 a.m., the last around 11:20 p.m. The trip takes about 1h15-1h30 (there’s usually a stop at the main bus station to catch a bus towards the hotels)
Keflavik airport – Reykjavik by taxi
Faster than the bus, but much, much more expensive. On the meter, count on 20,000 to 30,000 ISK depending on the destination and the time, so €140 to €210! The Hreyfill company offers a fixed price on airport transfers if you book ahead: 22,500 ISK (about €155) for 1 to 4 people, 29,250 ISK for 5 to 8 people.
I took it once because I had to pick up my van in the city centre before a certain time… the bill stings. On your own, it really isn’t worth it 😀 With 3/4 people, it can do the trick to save time.
You’ll find the taxis right outside the airport. They have a meter, it’s very reliable. Very Nordic. To get back from the city centre to the airport, you can use the (Android and iOS) app Hreyfill.
Honestly, at that price, you might as well book a private transfer: it’s cheaper and the driver waits for you with a sign.
Keflavik airport – Reykjavik by ride-hailing
Right, this one’s easy. There’s no Uber or Lyft in Iceland. On the other hand, the Icelandic app Hopp offers a similar service: order via the app, price estimate, built-in payment. It covers Reykjavik, Keflavik and the surrounding area. For regular taxis, the Hreyfill app is also still very reliable.
