taking the Bognes Skarberget ferry northern Norway

Dernière modification le

The Bognes–Skarberget ferry is an unavoidable stop on the E6, Norway’s main north-south road. There’s no way around it without a detour of several hundred kilometres: this is the only crossing over the Tysfjorden, 200 km north of the Arctic Circle. Here’s everything you need to know before you reach the terminal.

The boat is particularly large (makes sense — it’s the only crossing), so don’t stress: you will get on board, or at worst you’ll catch the next one.

Inside, you’ll find a very large seating area where you can sit back and enjoy the view. The outdoor deck is fairly limited, which is a bit of a shame. There’s a cafeteria, and if it happens to be closed, you can still help yourself and pay via the self-service machine. Very handy!

Why this ferry is unavoidable

The E6 — the main route linking Oslo to the Lofoten Islands and northern Norway — crosses the Tysfjorden at this exact point. The ferry between Bognes and Skarberget is essentially unavoidable. There is no alternative bridge or tunnel.

There is another ferry slightly further south, between Kjøpsvik and Drag, which takes a little longer (45 min) and costs slightly more (140 NOK). Or…

And if you don’t want to take a ferry at all, the only option is a 1,000 km loop through Abisko and into central Sweden. So really, the ferry is not a bad option!

It is the only remaining water crossing along the E6 in the whole of Norway. The operator is Fjord 1 ASA, under a public service concession. The crossing covers 6.8 km across the Tysfjorden and takes approximately 25 minutes.

How to pay the ferry

It’s straightforward. If you’re driving in Norway, with your own car or a rental, you almost certainly have an AutoPass tag. Or at worst, you’ve registered your number plate on Epass24, which lets you pay tolls automatically via plate recognition.

For this to work on ferries too, you need to register on Autopassferje (if you have a toll tag, to get the discounts) or on Ferrypay.

If you haven’t done that, you can normally pay by card directly to the person checking number plates. But do sign up to pay ferries automatically — it makes life much easier.

⚠️ Public holidays and summer weekends: the ferry keeps running throughout the day — public services don’t stop. In July–August, queues are possible at midday. Arriving one departure early is the best strategy.
