I love Cusco. I’ve been there several times and I never get tired of it — the city is so beautiful and its surroundings magnificent. It’s a colonial city with fantastic architecture, and the big perk is that every hotel in the historic centre sits inside a colonial building! Classic houses, palaces, former monasteries — some are absolutely insane.
Choosing your hotel here is tricky because there are genuinely so many good ones. So yes, some are pricey, but they really are in a league of their own! It’s worth a little budget sacrifice 😀 Otherwise, thankfully there’s something for every wallet. You can very easily find nice hotels for under €50 a night, especially outside the tourist season, or hostels. And you can treat yourself to some lovely hotels for under €100 a night.
In short, the question here isn’t whether you’ll find a quality hotel, but which one you’ll pick! I’ve put together a little selection to whet your appetite 🙂
WHERE TO STAY IN CUSCO
Which neighbourhoods to stay in Cusco
Okay, this one’s pretty simple. You don’t have a huge number of options. Well, you do, but the VERY BIG tip is to not stray far from the historic centre. Yes, you’ve got plenty of hotels all over Cusco, but there’s no point staying outside the centre because you’d be far from everything — the neighbourhoods worth seeing, the agencies — and it’s not necessarily safe.
So, I won’t be very original, but the best places to stay — the quietest, the best located — are:
- in the historic centre, around the Plaza de Armas, because that’s where everything is. Okay, the historic centre is big, and all the better for it! That gives you loads of options, but it really is the most beautiful part, with its colonial palaces, cobbled streets, narrow alleys and their tight stairways, gorgeous religious buildings. In short, being in the historic centre is genuinely lovely and the most practical! Basically, I’d advise not going further than the central market, and not staying too close to the stations.
- the San Blas neighbourhood, right above the historic centre (though you could consider it part of it), is the slightly bohemian, slightly trendy and also super pretty district. Watch out though — it’s all uphill, so if you’ve just arrived and you’re struggling to catch your breath, the first steps might be tough 😀 But it’s a really lovely, pretty neighbourhood!
The insane hotels of Cusco
That one’s easy! With surroundings like these — beautiful squares, historic buildings and gorgeous neighbourhoods — you’ll find several top-quality hotels. True, like the city itself, some are a touch pricey, so it’d be a little treat, but they’re all worth it. On our honeymoon we treated ourselves to something crazy by staying at the Palacio del Inka. And it was wild. They’re generally set in former colonial palaces, and you can really feel the history there.
Since they all offer incredible service and are more or less equivalent, I can’t really recommend one over another apart from the one I just mentioned, because it’s the only one we’ve actually slept in.
If you come outside the high season, the prices can be really attractive! Let’s take a look.

Great hotels that aren’t too expensive
As I said in the intro, the choice of hotels is really wide and you don’t have to sell a kidney to get a very lovely hotel. Here are 4, roughly around €100 depending on the season (between 70 and 150 — super precise, I know :D), but there are plenty of this kind. These are great for treating yourself without the guilt.

4 great places to stay in the San Blas neighbourhood
San Blas is a stone’s throw from the centre, all uphill, and really nice! It’s a little bit bohemian but quieter than quite a few streets in the historic centre. Fewer big restaurants, no big touristy bars — so it has plenty of perks.

STAYING IN THE SACRED VALLEY OF THE INCAS
Because Cusco isn’t the only place! The whole Sacred Valley is worth lingering in, and the good news is you don’t necessarily have to base yourself in Cusco and make day trips — you can absolutely sleep in the Valley, in Pisac, along the Urubamba or in Ollantaytambo. Staying in Pisac
Making a stop in Pisac is far from a bad idea. You’re a world away from the bustle of Cusco — it’s a peaceful place (apart from its market, which is genuinely worth it, and its citadel), and you’ll find hotels and guesthouses perfect for retreats, taking your time, doing yoga… a little hippie vibe reigns in Pisac!

There you go! You now know just about everything! The choice of hotels in Cusco really is excellent. Because it’s a tourist city, yes, but mostly because Cusco’s architecture is fantastic! So you’re bound to get a pretty, well-located hotel that isn’t too expensive (unless you’re being deliberately difficult :p ). And it’s the same in the Sacred Valley of the Incas, a must-see usually visited from Cusco — but staying there is actually really worthwhile! FAQ: Where to stay in Cusco and the Sacred Valley?
Should I stay in Cusco or in the Sacred Valley to avoid altitude sickness?
If you’re very sensitive to altitude, the best option is to sleep your first two nights in the Sacred Valley (in Pisac or Urubamba, around 2,800 m) rather than in Cusco (3,400 m). The altitude is lower there, which lets your body acclimatise gently before tackling the more physical visits and heading back up to Cusco. That said, if you mainly want to visit Cusco, stay in town and take the time to acclimatise.
What is the best neighbourhood to stay in Cusco for a first trip?
The historic centre (around the Plaza de Armas) is the ideal area: everything is walkable, the streets are safe, and that’s where most of the restaurants and agencies are. If you’re after a more bohemian, quiet and authentic vibe, go for San Blas. Be warned, though: San Blas is all uphill, its lanes climb steeply, which can be rough in the first few days with the altitude!
What is the difference between staying in Pisac, Urubamba and Ollantaytambo in the Sacred Valley?
All three villages are in the Sacred Valley but don’t offer the same experience. Pisac is lively (especially on Sundays with its famous craft market) and has plenty of cosy spots. Urubamba is the most central and best equipped with accommodation across all ranges — it’s the most versatile choice. Ollantaytambo is the most strategic if you’re catching the train to Machu Picchu the next morning, and its still-preserved Inca historic centre is worth the trip on its own. Choose according to your priorities: market atmosphere (Pisac), comfort and a central location (Urubamba) or train logistics (Ollantaytambo).
How many nights should I plan for Cusco and the Valley?
To enjoy it properly without rushing, the ideal is to plan at least 4 to 5 nights in the region. For example: 1 to 2 nights in the Sacred Valley (Urubamba or Ollantaytambo) to acclimatise and visit the major ruins, 1 night in Aguas Calientes at the foot of Machu Picchu, and 2 nights in Cusco to savour the former Inca capital. Take a good look at this itinerary around Cusco, it should give you plenty of inspiration!
Where to stay to catch the train to Machu Picchu?
The most strategic spot is Ollantaytambo. This is where the main station is, from which most of the trains (Inca Rail and PeruRail) leave for Aguas Calientes. Sleeping there the night before saves you having to get up at 3 a.m. to catch a collective minibus or a taxi from Cusco.
Do I need to book far in advance in Aguas Calientes?
Yes, and it’s absolutely critical. Aguas Calientes is a small, landlocked village at the foot of Machu Picchu, with a fairly limited number of hotels. In high season (June–August) and around the Peruvian holidays, accommodation fills up several months ahead. Some travellers end up having to head back down the same evening to Ollantaytambo for failing to plan ahead. Book 2 to 3 months in advance if you’re travelling in high season, to have a choice. A few short weeks ahead and you’ll still have options, but the more expensive ones. By the way, the Machu Picchu tickets themselves need to be booked much earlier.
How far in advance should I book in Cusco?
For Cusco city, the choice of hotels is wide and you can often find good spots up to a few weeks before. However, in high season (June–August) or around Inti Raymi (late June), book 1 to 2 months in advance so the best places in the centre don’t slip away. You’ll still have a choice. But the best hotels, the best views, the best value for money will be full. If you’re in backpacker mode, you’ll be fine, but the earlier you plan, the better in July/August. Otherwise it’s never fully booked.
For the Sacred Valley, the high-end lodges (often praised for acclimatisation) sell out very early — count on 2 to 3 months minimum for those categories.
Is it easy to leave your luggage at the hotel during an excursion to Machu Picchu?
Yes, it’s a standard and free practice. Almost all hotels and hostels in Cusco and the Sacred Valley have a secure storage room (custodia de equipaje). Since the trains to Aguas Calientes limit luggage weight (often 5 kg max per person), you can travel light to Machu Picchu for 1 or 2 days and pick up your big suitcases on your return.
What budget should I plan for accommodation in Cusco?
Cusco suits every budget. Count on €15 to €30 a night for a hostel or a decent hostal, €50 to €100 for a good charming hotel in the historic centre, and €150 to €300+ for high-end hotels like the Palacio del Inka or the JW Marriott. In Aguas Calientes, prices are generally higher for equivalent quality, because the village’s isolation limits competition. In the Sacred Valley, eco-luxury lodges can exceed €400 a night — but the views and the calm are often worth it.
Do all of Cusco’s hotels have heating and oxygen?
No, it’s not a given. In Cusco, nights can be very chilly (sometimes close to 0°C in winter, from May to August). High-end and upper-mid-range hotels generally offer heated rooms and an oxygen-injection system (like the Palacio del Inka). For budget options and hostels, check the reviews carefully or ask for extra blankets (mantas).
