Want to discover Finnish Lapland stress-free, with all the info you need? Good news: I’ve created a free interactive map for you, so you can see, choose, plan – and above all have fun!
It’s available here: Google Maps “Finnish Lapland”.
In this article, I’ll explain how to use it, what it contains, and how to make the most of your trip to the land of northern lights, reindeer and wide white spaces. Here we go!
- for the moment, the details in the map are in French, but the English version should be released soon ! But even if you don’t speak French, you can easily understand and choose your activities and places to see
When you head off to Finnish Lapland, you often wonder where to start, which are the best places to stay, which accommodation to choose… but above all, what activities to do and with whom!
In order to make your life easier (and mine too, for that matter), I’ve put together a map :
- the best places to visit
- the accommodations I’ve spotted or specially thought of (chalets, lodges, forest cabins), as well as glass igloos, those crazy accommodations for watching the Northern Lights
- all the top activities (dog sledding, snowmobiling, reindeer farms…) and service providers, large and small, there’s something for everyone!
- the best northern lights agencies by city
- practical services, airports, car rental services
- and much, much more!
In short, all this so that you have a single, clear, visual aid to prepare your stay, without scattering information all over the place.
Presentation of the Finnish Lapland map
In concrete terms, here’s what you’ll find on this map:
- Places to see
- The main national parks in the area, such as Riisitunturi, Urho Kaleva Kekkonen… but also the main waterfalls, Sami museums in particular, pretty lookout points…
- Glass igloos
- To sleep under the Northern Lights, take advantage of these incredible accommodations
- Accommodation in Lapland
- In every town, but also lost in nature, you’ll find a selection of quality accommodation in all price ranges. And for every accommodation entry, you’ll find the price and the rating, so you can compare and contrast.
- Must-do activities and their providers
- When we go to Finnish Lapland, it’s usually to enjoy the magic of winter and to do the main activities such as dog sledding, snowmobiling, visiting reindeer farms… but there are many others! I’ve also listed the best service providers by town, with prices and reviews.
- Bars and restaurants
- Okay, I’ll admit that this isn’t the best region for eating out. But to be honest, there are some local restaurants that are well worth a try! Just be careful, the bill can sting!
- Guided tours
- Because you want to know more, or because you don’t have a car and you want to discover the region, guided tours will be your best ally, and there are some excellent ones!
- Practical info
- Here’s some useful information on cabs, transport, planes and the airport.
How to use the Google Maps of Finnish Lapland
Well, it’s pretty straightforward. First of all, you need to know that this Google Maps map is organized in layers. A layer is a set of points of interest, which I’ve made thematically, and each layer is independent of the others.
In other words, the most beautiful places, sled dogs, snowmobile providers, accommodation… are grouped together by layer. Why is this? Because they can be selected and displayed one by one.
So if, for example, you’re not interested in the accommodation layer, or you only want to see the sled dogs, you can hide the others by unchecking the corresponding boxes (see example below, it’s super simple).
Of course, this works just as well on a cell phone as on a computer. Very practical.
My other maps made on Google Maps
As I find them super practical, these interactive maps are a concept I’m trying to develop as much as possible. It really helps you plan and optimize your trip, even when you’re already on the road. At least it works for me! So I hope it works for you too 😀
It allows you to see right away where the must-see places are, without wasting time. At least I think so!
I’ve done some in other countries, which might interest you too, if you like the idea. Some are still in French, but you will easily understand as there are figures and images 🙂

Finnish Lapland really is a vast territory, but one with many possibilities! This map should give you a clearer idea. But it’s not possible to see everything, especially as many places look the same. The best way to visit is to land in one place, then wander around and enjoy the activities. Renting a car is a good idea, but not necessarily essential if you have activities planned!
