Castle in Városliget, Budapest

Dernière modification le

Crossed by the Danube and split between the peaceful hills of Buda and the buzz of Pest, Budapest is a city where your choice of neighbourhood completely changes the experience of your stay.

Between the hyper-central core where everything is walkable, the Jewish Quarter that never sleeps, the elegant Andrássy Avenue and the romantic heights of the castle, here’s where to stay in Budapest depending on your travel style — and the few areas to avoid.

There’s a real contrast between my first visit twenty years ago and my most recent ones: the hotel scene has grown enormously, but above all the hotels (and apartments too) are genuinely good! Whenever I go, I can see how easy it is to treat yourself, especially off-season when prices are slashed. So yes, prices are creeping up as the city gets more popular, but it’s still very reasonable.

To plan your sightseeing, take a look too at my little guide on what to see in Budapest.

My favourite hotels in Budapest

As I was saying, you can find really great places to stay here without spending too much — here are 4 examples. I’m not pushing the most luxurious hotels on you, but excellent places that all have a little something extra and are hugely popular. On my last visit the Roombach was superbly located — hard to be better placed!

Upmarket hotels, to treat yourself

Here are some of the finest addresses in Budapest. The big advantage of the city is that you can get pretty amazing hotels, set in palaces, without it costing you an arm and a leg outside peak season. So a real chance to treat yourself 🙂

Which area to stay in Budapest?

Budapest is divided into 23 districts (kerület), but most visitors concentrate on four areas, all in Pest or just across the river in Buda. Each has its own personality: it’s up to you to choose depending on whether you’re after absolute centrality, nightlife, cultural charm, or peace and quiet with beautiful views.

1. District V – Belváros / Lipótváros: the hyper-central core

This is the beating heart of Budapest, on the Pest side: the most central district, where you drop your bags to have everything within walking distance. You’ll find the major landmarks, the pedestrian shopping streets and the Danube embankments, in a lively atmosphere from morning to night.

  • Who it’s for: a first visit to Budapest, those who want to do everything on foot, travellers who value safety and simplicity even if it costs a little more.
  • What’s nearby: Parliament, St. Stephen’s Basilica, Vörösmarty Square and Váci Street, the Danube promenade with the Shoes on the Danube Bank, and the Great Market Hall.
  • Why stay here: the most convenient location in the city, almost entirely walkable for the main sights, perfectly served by metro and trams, and one of the safest areas at night.

3. District VI – Terézváros: around Andrássy Avenue

  • Who it’s for: couples and lovers of fine architecture, culture and shopping, who want somewhere central but quieter than the Jewish Quarter.

4. District I – The Castle District (Buda)

This is postcard Budapest, perched on the Buda bank: cobbled lanes, historic monuments and the finest views over the Danube and the floodlit Parliament. A peaceful, romantic atmosphere, away from the hustle and bustle.

  • Who it’s for: couples looking for romance, history and view lovers, and travellers who prefer quiet evenings.
  • What’s nearby: Buda Castle, the Fisherman’s Bastion, Matthias Church, Gellért Hill and the Citadel, with the most beautiful views over the city.
  • Why stay here: a unique, romantic setting, very quiet at night, perfect for waking up to one of the finest panoramas in Europe — as long as you’re happy to be a little further from the nightlife.

Where not to stay in Budapest?

Good news first: Budapest is, on the whole, a very safe city for travellers. So this isn’t about avoiding “dangerous” areas, but mainly about not ending up in a district that’s inconvenient or disappointing for a sightseeing stay.

The most frequently mentioned spot is the eastern edges of District VIII (Józsefváros), around Keleti station and the north-east of the district (Népszínház Street, the Magdolna quarter, Orczy Square, the area between Blaha Lujza tér and Corvin). Long seen as working-class and run-down, it’s undergoing major regeneration but remains uneven from one street to the next: it’s best to stay alert there in the evening. Take care not to confuse it with the Palotanegyed (the western part of District VIII, known as the “palace quarter”), which is charming and perfectly recommendable.

Next, avoid the outer districts — especially District X (Kőbánya, industrial and isolated), part of District IX, and generally districts XV to XXIII. Residential and far out, they’d have you spending your stay on public transport for almost no sightseeing value.

Finally, two “good to know” habits rather than real areas to flee: avoid isolated underpasses at night, and watch out for pickpockets in the crowded bars of the Jewish Quarter, as well as fake taxis after midnight.

The best value for money

The ultimate smart choice: comfortable, well-located and highly rated hotels at prices that stay gentle. The guarantee of a good night’s sleep without blowing your budget. And honestly, there are loads of quality options that aren’t especially pricey in Budapest!

Conclusion and extra resources

That’s it, now you know everything! Of course it’s impossible to list all the good hotels in Budapest, there are so many! And in every neighbourhood. The idea was really to show you that you can easily find something that suits your needs, that there’s something for everyone, and that it doesn’t cost a fortune — that’s what’s great about Budapest!

You’re always a stone’s throw from a great place to visit, always close to everything. Just keep an eye on the season, as summer is quite a bit pricier while the low season really offers some lovely options.

Unless you leave it to the last minute in the middle of summer, you’re bound to find something nice.
